How to Successfully Whiten Your Teeth Using Home Techniques

Dentist Blog

One look at the sales of some teeth whitening products available would be all that is necessary to confirm the size of this giant market. Hundreds of millions of dollars are spent globally by humans in the pursuit of white teeth.

It is possible, however, to remove stains and whiten teeth by using some inexpensive, but in many cases just as effective, products that are usually already in the home. These products can give some surprisingly good results. This article looks at some of the ways to whiten teeth using techniques that can be done at home.

Citrus Peel

It is popular in some countries to apply the inside of a freshly peeled lemon or orange to the teeth, and hold it there for around half an hour. Afterwards, the peel is removed, and the mouth is rinsed clean with water to remove any debris from the teeth.

The key to this homemade remedy is the acid in the citrus peel. When applied directly to the teeth, it can work away on stains and other agents that cause the teeth to discolor. Using this kind of treatment regularly can be effective, and quite noticeable.

Vinegar

It is usually apple cider vinegar that is used for this home remedy. The acidic content in the cider vinegar will effectively remove any yellowing or discoloring. It is also effective for removing tough or stubborn stains. Take care when using acids to remove tooth stains; the enamel can be removed without due care, and it will not grow back. Complete the process by afterwards brushing with regular toothpaste.

Baking Soda Mix

It is possible to create your own teeth whitening paste that you can brush your teeth with before brushing again with regular toothpaste. Baking soda can be mixed with hydrogen peroxide. The resultant paste is a thorough and effective way to not only whiten teeth, but to kill bacteria on the gums. This can cut down on gum related pain and problems.

Diet

Some raw vegetables and fruit, such as celery or apples, can help to remove stains while you chew on them. The movement of the jaw needed to break down these kinds of tough and resistant foods promotes the use of more teeth. This means that stains can be removed from most areas of the teeth when you regularly chew and eat these types of raw vegetables and fruits.

It is also a good idea to drink plenty of water, as this can remove any debris that could potentially stain teeth. You can learn about other teeth whitening tips by talking to local dental clinics such as Swansea Family Dental.

Dental Health: Not To Be Taken For Granted

As a retired dentist, I work with charities which visit developing countries and educate children about dental care. It gives me great satisfaction to revisit these communities and see how proud the children are of their efforts. I am acutely aware that good dental hygiene can help prevent a range of serious conditions when these children become older. I started this blog because it greatly distresses me that many people in Australia do not seem to care for their teeth as much as children in these poor communities. This is happening despite ready access to items like toothbrushes and toothpaste which are luxuries in the places I visit. It is my hope that this blog encourages you not to take dental health for granted. My greatest wish is that you can be as inspired as the children I see in my charity work. Please read on and enjoy.
