Why Your Child Needs a Pedodontist

Dentist Blog

Throughout life, maintaining good oral health is crucial, but it is particularly more essential for young children. It is vital for every parent to provide preventive oral care for their young children at the soonest time and chance possible, thus allowing the children to develop proper dental habits and maintain good oral health.

A pedodontist is a pediatrician who is primarily concerned with providing oral care for your children. They will provide oral care for your children from birth through to their teenage years into young adulthood and can perform different types of dental procedures, including filling cavities, tooth extractions, fitting braces, etc.

Maximum focus on the special needs of your children

Aside from being qualified in general dentistry, a pedodontist also receives additional training in child development. This implies that pedodontists are exceptionally familiar with pediatric oral health as well as child behavior management.

As such, they have the finesse to meet the special needs of all children, including those with congenital cardiac disorder, autism, cleft lip and palate, diabetes, epilepsy, etc., which is something that may be lacking in general dental practices not fully centered on the needs of special children.

Alleviate the stress associated with attending dental appointments

As a parent, if you've been having a difficult time getting your child to see a dentist, you no longer have to worry about forcing him or her to make the trip. Pedodontists are skilled at handling children, especially those who are restless or who are terrified of having dental procedures.

A trained pedodontist can create a rapport with a child, e.g. by offering to reward them with small presents if they behave well during the visit and take good care of their teeth while at home. Such incentives can help the children to relax and alleviate dental anxiety and may make future appointments to the pedodontist's office nothing but a delightful experience for both you and your children.

Enjoy integrated oral care

By capitalizing on their knowledge in child development, pedodontists can educate parents or guardians on how to help their children maintain good pediatric oral health. A pedodontist can give you some handy tips and techniques that will assist in providing a truly holistic pediatric oral care, including diet and hygiene habits.

The above article clearly indicates that finding a pedodontist is a prudent decision for both you and your children, as only they can provide the special oral care your children require while growing up. Keep this in mind when looking at different dental clinics, like Clifton Hill Dental.

Dental Health: Not To Be Taken For Granted

As a retired dentist, I work with charities which visit developing countries and educate children about dental care. It gives me great satisfaction to revisit these communities and see how proud the children are of their efforts. I am acutely aware that good dental hygiene can help prevent a range of serious conditions when these children become older. I started this blog because it greatly distresses me that many people in Australia do not seem to care for their teeth as much as children in these poor communities. This is happening despite ready access to items like toothbrushes and toothpaste which are luxuries in the places I visit. It is my hope that this blog encourages you not to take dental health for granted. My greatest wish is that you can be as inspired as the children I see in my charity work. Please read on and enjoy.
