4 Reasons Why You Should Have a Family Dentist

Dentist Blog

Family dentistry is a great way to make life easier while offering quality dental care for your family. If you're tired of visiting a different dentist each time to accommodate the range of oral needs of your family, it's time to switch to a family dentist. While a family dentist and a general dentist are often confused, they have one difference. This is, while a general dentist is usually restricted to a specific age group, a family dentist will serve all your family members.

Here are a few important reasons why you should have a family dentist.

You Have a Go-To in Times of Emergency

Accidents happen at any time and to anyone. Adults aren't the only people vulnerable to cracked or chipped teeth. With all the roughhousing that comes with playing, your children are at a danger of having dental emergencies. For example, if your kid's baby tooth has fallen out or you have a debilitating toothache, where do you go?

With a family dentist, you don't need to worry about where to go in times of such emergencies. A simple call to your family dentist will do. This is extremely convenient since emergencies rarely allow for the time to search for a new dentist.

One of the reasons for having a family practitioner in any field is the familiarity you get when you visit. It is the same case as a family dentist. All your oral health information is available at their disposal. The dentist will be familiar with all your specific dental needs and healthcare issues.

Kids need time to bond with new adults introduced to them. With a family dentist, you'll have the same dentist you took them from day one. Maintaining the same dentist through their formative years helps foster a positive relationship with the dentist.

Proactive Preventive Care

Just like in most issues in life, preventive care is preferred to curative care. Preventing the dental problem from occurring in the first place is usually much better than investing your money and time to get it treated. Having a family dentist will provide just that.

Regular check-up appointments will check the whole family's gums and teeth for any underlying problems. The dentist can then treat them in a timely manner before they result in permanent damage.

Better and Personalised Care

A family dentist understands your dental needs and those of your family. For example, they know which kid is squeamish about needles and which one is more relaxed when asking questions about the procedures. Since the dentist understands your behaviours and oral health records, they can anticipate and help with specific concerns, quirks, and questions. Therefore, they are able to provide you and your family with personalised care.

When you visit a family dentist, you're setting a great example for your kids. A family dentist will help make check-up visits to the dentist a regular habit for your family, and greatly improve your oral health and that of your family.

Dental Health: Not To Be Taken For Granted

As a retired dentist, I work with charities which visit developing countries and educate children about dental care. It gives me great satisfaction to revisit these communities and see how proud the children are of their efforts. I am acutely aware that good dental hygiene can help prevent a range of serious conditions when these children become older. I started this blog because it greatly distresses me that many people in Australia do not seem to care for their teeth as much as children in these poor communities. This is happening despite ready access to items like toothbrushes and toothpaste which are luxuries in the places I visit. It is my hope that this blog encourages you not to take dental health for granted. My greatest wish is that you can be as inspired as the children I see in my charity work. Please read on and enjoy.
